Semrén & Månsson and Goodfeed on client relationships in the construction industry

How they are strengthening their relationships in an era of digitalization and AI

The construction industry is undergoing a transformative period marked by rapid digitalization and the introduction of AI. Despite these technical advancements, the challenges surrounding client and consultant relationships have also increased. In this new landscape, strong client relationships have become a decisive competitive advantage, a topic recently highlighted by Svensk Byggtidning.

The article emphasizes that the increased use of digital communication has changed how relationships are maintained, requiring new approaches to ensure deep client connections.

The architectural firm Semrén & Månsson works with property owners, real estate developers, and construction companies, as well as one-time clients for specific projects such as renovations. Relationships with clients are often long-term, averaging two to six years, but have become more transient in line with a faster-paced and more volatile society.

We are seeing a shift where client relationships have become shorter. The time available for relationship-building is decreasing, and it is important that we plan for more long-term and sustainable solutions for our clients. Quality and adaptability are more important now than trends and quantity, says Hanna Pettersson, Business Development Manager and Lead Architect at Semrén & Månsson.

Economic uncertainty has also influenced client priorities and demands.

In tougher times, price becomes more central and clients are more prone to putting contracts out to tender. We must be careful to offer smart and efficient solutions without compromising on quality. We have also learned that communication requires more time and focus for us to deliver greater business value despite strained resources. Digital meetings are practical, but we often lose the important pre- and post-meeting chatter. That is often where we truly get to know each other and resolve any potential misunderstandings. We have become more efficient, but sometimes a five-minute phone call makes the biggest difference, explains Hanna Pettersson.

Semrén & Månsson has also adapted its methods to meet these new challenges.

AI and digital solutions make us more efficient, but to truly stand out, we must work on human relationships. It is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of productivity, but we see that it often takes more time for the personal touch to create long-term and sustainable relationships. We build trust and loyalty by creating genuine partnerships, not just by delivering services, concludes Hanna Pettersson.
